On Friday, September 30th we will have our first Positive Math Day Party during 6th hour. As part of our Positive Math Celebrations, I will be inviting three students from each class that exhibit the qualities of hard work and a positive attitude to come to the Media Center during 6th hour to celebrate their success.
For our first celebration, since we have experience such hot weather, we will be hosting an Ice Cream Sundae Bar and raffling off T-Shirts. I hope that all students will have a chance to celebrate with us at some point throughout this year.

This week on Wednesday we finished learning about our last learning target for the unit. On Thursday we began reviewing all of the material we have covered in unit 1 in preparation for our first unit test.
The Unit 1 Test will be on Wednesday, September 28th If students are looking for additional resources to help them prepare: - look at the Partner Practice Test that we did in class on Thursday (I will be returning on Monday to go over how you did in detail. -try doing the Kahoot! that we did in class on Friday again

- Review and answer the questions on the study guide (we will be doing a whiteboard review in class on Tuesday that goes over this material - so here is a sneak peek.
Yesterday (Thursday, Sept 15th), students had a chance to show what they have learned about:
Learning Target 5: Plotting points Learning Target 6: Creating input/output tables Learning Target 1: Determining the independent and dependent variables of a scenario Learning Target 2: Using the Vertical Line Test to determine if a graph is a function Grades for the quiz were posted in student connect today, and overall everyone did a great job. If students missed the quiz, or are unhappy with their performance - they can always take the quiz over again during tutoring hours next week. Everyone has a chance to be successful when you put in the work! Today students received their Carnegie Algebra 1 Volume 1 Textbook. Through out the semester we will be using these workbooks to work through various problems - they are your book to write in and take notes in.
You need to have a safe and reliable place to store you workbook. I have a bookshelf in class that every hour can use to store your book. If you would like to take your book with you - BE RESPONSIBLE TO BRING IT EVERYDAY!!! Don't leave it at home or in a friend's locker. You only get one workbook - keep track of it. If you are home and want to refer to the book, I'm including the PDF version of Chapter 1 here: common_core_algebra_i_student_text_chapter_1.pdf This week we started the week off with a pretest on Unit 1 to see what student's already know about our six learning targets for this unit. During the next month we will be learning:
Learning Target 1: Identify independent and dependent variables Learning Target 2: Given a graph or equation, determine if it is a function using the vertical line test. Learning Target 3: Analyze graphs to look for common characteristics Learning Target 4: Recognize characteristics of function families; determine function types given certain characteristics. Learning Target 5: Graph ordered pairs and identify the location of ordered pairs on the coordinate plane. Learning Target 6: Complete input/output tables and graph coordinates for a given equation This week we worked on our learning targets 5, 6, and 1. Students had a chance to review plotting points on a coordinate graph as well as create an input/output table that they used to plot points and create the corresponding line. On Thursday and Friday we moved on to look at what independent and dependent variables are and how to determine them from a word problem or scenario. As always, if you want to review any of this, or check to see what you may have missed - check out my calendar page for assignment worksheets and notes from class. On Thursday (Sept 8th), I sent out my first email to parents and guardians that I have contact information for. If you didn't receive an email, but would like to be on the list, please email me and let me know! You can reach me at [email protected].
Today we reviewed the syllabus and complete the pretest for unit 1. Students were given a the assignment of getting a parent/guardian signature on the syllabus and bringing the signed copy back tomorrow for credit.
We spent the first week (Tue, Aug 30 - Thur, Sept 1) taking care of some of the basics. Students had a chance to give me basic information about themselves in the form of a tweet, fill out a math personality quiz, and get familiar with the TI-NSpire calculators that we will be using this year.
If you missed the first week of school - we missed you! You can make up any of the assignments by seeing me to get copies of the work. Students received 10 points credit for all 3 activities in the grade book as classwork. Please make sure you don't miss these points. |
